Meaning and background
The story behind Dodo
Dodo is the common English name of the extinct, flightless bird from Mauritius. Its word origin has competing Portuguese and Dutch explanations; Harvard's museum account cautions that the familiar derivation from Portuguese for 'fool' may not be the whole story. Popular portrayals of the bird as stupid are also misleading. As a dog's name Dodo is therefore more accurately an animal reference, with a rounded repeated sound, than an insult or a firm translation.
