Meaning and background
The story behind Doge
Doge has two strikingly unrelated identities. Historically it was the title of the chief magistrate of Venice and Genoa, descending through Venetian from Latin dux, 'leader'. On the internet it became a playful misspelling of dog and a meme featuring Shiba Inu photographs, especially one of Kabosu. The famous image-based meaning is particularly apt for a dog name, but it is not the origin of the centuries-old Venetian title.
