Meaning and background
The story behind Wess
Wess can look like an alternative spelling of Wes, but the surname Wess has its own recorded history. Genealogical references describe both a German route through Wasmuot and an English variant of Wass. Which, if any, explains a particular dog's name cannot be settled by its spelling. The extra final s does not itself create a new meaning, so a cautious description is better than treating it as definitely Wesley's nickname.
- Origin
- As a surname, Wess may be German from a short form of Wasmuot or English as a variant of Wass; the resemblance to given name Wes is a separate possibility. Source
