Meaning and background
The story behind Wilhelmina
Wilhelmina is a Dutch and German feminine form of Wilhelm, whose older Germanic elements mean will or desire and helmet or protection. It was also the name of a queen of the Netherlands, although that royal connection is a later association. This is a long, multi-syllable formal name that can be shortened to forms such as Mina or Wilma. It should not be translated simply as 'strong warrior' without qualification.
